(Short Interview):

Q: What is your daily life routine?

From Monday to Friday, I go to school and on the weekends I study English. When I am free, I like to read Japanese books and magazines.

Q: What about English books?

With my current level, it is still difficult for me to understand English books or magazines. But in the future, I would like to read them.

Q: How long do you study English on the weekends?

I study English for a total of three hours on Saturdays and Sundays.

Q: What is your motivation to study English?

I am very interested in different cultures and languages like English and French. Since I want to travel and meet more people outside Japan, I think about my future of speaking English fluently to foreigners. That goal keeps me motivated to continue learning English.

Q: What is your favorite way to practice English and why?

I like reading and speaking so I try to read short news articles from the internet every day. Even when I am on the train, I use my time to look at these websites and read these articles. Since I don’t have foreign friends in Japan, I enjoy practice speaking English during my lessons in Kudan which I attend twice a week.

Q: What do you think is the difference from when you first started learning English compared to now?

I started to learn English when I was in Junior High. During that time, I only learned grammar, reading, and a little writing. I could only use very basic vocabulary so I couldn’t speak very well. Now that I am a university student, my grammar and reading skills have improved a lot but I still need to practice writing and speaking more. Communicating in English is still a big problem for me.

Q: What was your previous TOEIC score? How long did it take you to study before you were able to achieve your current score?

Last September 2014, I took the TOEIC and my score was 445. I studied for half a year before that but I wasn’t satisfied. So, after September, it took me 3 months to study and practice harder so I was able to achieve 695 last December 2014.

Q: Are you satisfied with your current score? Are you planning to take the TOEIC again in the near future?

Of course I am happy that I was able to achieve 695 from 445 in 3 months. However, I plan to take the TOEIC again in March. After that, I want to focus more on improving my speaking skills.

Q: What do you think you will be able to do with English in the future?

Currently, I do not have any specific plan yet but I would really like to travel and see the world. I am very interested to meet more people and learn different cultures. So, I would like to use English in my future travels.

Q: What advice can you give other learners in order to motivate them in their English studies?

We all have our own goals in studying English. My advice is to focus on that goal and I think that will motivate a person a lot. Like me, my motivation is imagining myself speaking English fluently to foreigners. I enjoy learning because of this goal and I think this is a very good way to motivate ourselves to never give up.
